Overview: Caltha LLP was retained by this food manufacturing processing facility to conducted an evaluation to determine if a new project planned at the facility would require a modification to the existing air emission permit issued by MPCA or if prior notifications would be required for the project. Caltha staff reviewed project plans to determine added air emissions resulting from the new project. These estimates were added to emission estimates for all other permitted sources at the facility to determine if any permit actions were required. Based on the technical evaluation, it was determined that the project could be constructed with no permit modifications or notifications.

Charactorization & Disposal of Corrosive Unused/Obsolete Products and Raw Materials

Overview: Caltha LLP assisted this specialty chemical manufacturer in characterizing and determining proper disposal options for a wide variety of unused products, raw materials and wastes which had been accumulated on-site. Products and raw materials were paired with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to assist in characterization of wastes, and in cases where the SDS was not adequate or reliable, coordinated testing of materials to characterize wastes. Caltha staff then identified potential waste handling and disposal options which included:

  • Return to vendors
  • On-site neutralization
  • Discharge to sanitary sewer with approval by sewer authority
  • Shipment off-site for processing and disposal at a permitted TSDF

Caltha staff then coordinated handling and disposal of the various waste streams based on the preferred option for each waste.

Overview: Caltha LLP was retained by this specialty plastics manufacturer to review and summarize federal, state and local regulations regarding store of compressed flammable gas at their location. The facility was planning a new process which would require storage and use of flammable materials not previously used on-site. The review included local fire department rules, county hazardous material storage requirements, State tank and hazardous material storage regulations, and federal EPCRA Tier 2 and TRI reporting requirements.

Overview: This manufacturing facility had evaluated potential exposure of materials and industrial activities and determined that they met the criteria to certify “No Exposure”. In Pennsylvania, No Exposure Certifiaction (NEC) sites are required to prepare a facility Preparedness, Prevention, and Contingency (PPC) Plan in accordance with DEP “Guidelines for the Development and Implementation of Environmental Emergency Response Plans”. Caltha worked with facility and corporate contacts to prepare the plan for the facility to submit with their NEC application.

Overview: Caltha LLP was retained by this boat manufacture sector facility to prepare the stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) and related compliance documentation as required under the revised Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) GENERAL PERMIT FOR DISCHARGES FROM STORMWATER ASSOCIATED WITH INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES DISCHARGE PERMIT NO. 12-SW NPDES PERMIT NO. MDR0000. This permit became effective on January 1, 2014, which necessitated the facility to update its existing SWPPP and compliance programs to meet new requirements. Caltha prepared the facility SWPPP using our Maryland SWPPP Template which had recently been updated to align with the new requirements in General Permit No. 12-SW. Caltha also prepared site-specific checklists for the facility to use to conduct quarterly inspections, annual comprehensive site compliance evaluations, and to document the evaluation and elimination of any non-permitted discharges.
